Port Clinton Ohio is Good Walleye Ice Fishing Area.

The ice is good at Port Clinton Ohio and fisherman are venturing out to catch jumbo perch and walleye.  As I write this post on January 4, 2018, the ice is about 6 inches thick and guys are going a mile out.  Here is a video of a guy who didn't have great luck on walleye but it shows a few fish, as well as, some jumbo perch.

Be careful if you fish from Port Clinton as sometimes the ice breaks away and creates openings as explained by Chris in this video.  Tight lines!

Northern Pike Compete with Other Predators Like Walleye and Should Not Be Introduced.

A friend of mine in the Western USA just sent me this article which was posted on County10.com  It is very important to not introduce any non-native fish or organism to any body of water.  Lake Erie has been a similar victim recently with the introduction of the round goby and other fish like the white perch.

A photo posted on County10.com Tuesday morning of a Pavillion angler and the Northern Pike he caught in Ocean Lake on his birthday has confirmed the worst fears of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

“We heard about a northern being caught in Ocean last winter, but we were never able to put our hands on the fish, so this is the first official confirmation that northern are in there,” said Craig Amadio, WGFD fisheries biologist in Lander. “Northern Pike are very aggressive that require a lot of food. There are suckers, carp and such in the lake for them to eat, but with a predator like that our big concern is they could escape and establish themselves in other waters, we want to keep them out of Boysen.”Amadio said people don’t realize how easily fish can move around. “We’ve been managing Ocean Lake for walleye, which is another top predator, and to have two top predators in the lake is not good for what we want to do there,” he said. The fisheries biologist said that because northern are such voracious eaters, they don’t do well in Wyoming waters because there are usually not enough fish to sustain them.

Amadio praised the angler, Russell Naef (above), for keeping the fish intact and calling in when the G&F reposted in comments on the photo reaching out to him. “We want to get the otoliths from the fish (inner earbone) because we can tell how old the fish is as otoliths grow in rings, and they retain the chemical signature of the water they grew up in, so we can tell where it came from when it was young,” he said.

“We have to assume there are more of them in Ocean Lake. If any other angler catches one, we’d like them not to release it back into the water, but kill it and keep the head so we can harvest the otoliths,” he said. “These northern are a threat to our entire fishery out there.”

Amadio, who came to Lander from Green River, said he’s had experience at Flaming Gorge when Burbot first showed up there. “We manage that for lake trout and kokanee salmon, but the burbot are also top predators and they’ve had a negative impact there.”

He said it’s way too early to know how the northern got into Ocean Lake in the first place.

National Guard FLW Walleye Tour Headed to Lake Erie

PORT CLINTON, Ohio (April 25, 2012) - The warm winter of 2012 had Lake Erie about a month ahead of where it normally would have been in March for walleye habitat and spawning. So when the National Guard FLW Walleye Tour presented by Dr Pepper visits the Great Lake May 12-14 anglers may not expect to see some of the spectacular weights that have been seen in past years. Jeff Graves of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, won the 2011 event with more than 117 pounds. It is predicted that the winning weight will be right around the century mark - still nothing to sneeze about and one of the reasons anglers look forward to this stop on the FLW Walleye Tour year after year.

Hosted by the City of Port Clinton and Lake Erie Shores and Islands, the tournament will feature as many as 150 of the world's best walleye anglers in each of the pro and co-angler divisions. They will be casting for top awards up to $63,000 in the Pro Division and $10,500 in the Co-angler Division.

According to FLW Walleye pro Joe Whitten of Toledo, Ohio, current water temperatures are right around 53 degrees. These earlier-than-normal temps have moved the walleye out of their traditional holding spots for this time of year and have spread the fish all the way from Toledo to Cleveland.

"The fish are all spawned out," said Whitten, who is coming off a seventh-place finish at the 2012 FLW Walleye Tour event on the Mississippi River last week. "The fish have scattered; you will not see the concentrations of fish that have been seen in the past. There are no large schools of fish swimming around anymore.

"This tournament is going to be different than we have seen in any other year. Anglers are going to have to learn the lake all over again. Warm water temperatures have caused havoc amongst the walleye. The key is going to be finding decent water to fish. In the past, fishing island structures has always been a good pattern. Not so this year. The fish could be anywhere, and it is going to be finding the perfect water clarity that is going to make the difference."

While Whitten believes that weights will be down from last year, he still thinks it is going to take 33 to 35 pounds per day to win. "The good news is that everyone is still going to catch fish. Anglers will be able to catch fish pulling crankbaits or spinners; it's not going to matter. However, if this tournament would have been held a month ago, we would have been bringing in 50-pound sacks. But 35 pounds is still fun to catch!"

Anglers will take off from the Nor'Easter Club located at 2801 Nor'Easter Cove Road in Port Clinton at 6:30 each morning. Thursday's and Friday's weigh-ins will be held at Waterworks Park in Port Clinton beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday's final weigh-in will be held at the Walmart located at 2826 East Harbor Road in Port Clinton beginning at 4 p.m.

Prior to the final weigh-in on Saturday fans will be treated to the FLW Expo at Walmart from noon-4 p.m. The Expo includes the opportunity to interact with professional anglers, a trout pond and interactive games and activities. The NPAA will be offering a free Youth and Family Fishing Clinic beginning at 2:30 p.m. Prizes, including rods & reels, will be given away after the clinic. All activities are free and open to the public.

FLW Walleye Tour pro anglers will be on hand to sign autographs, take pictures and talk fishing to fans of all ages prior to the tournament when Baumann Auto Center, located at 625 Southeast Catawba Road in Port Clinton, hosts Chevy Pro Night Tuesday, May 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. Scheduled to appear are Chevy pro Jason Przekurat, Walmart pro Dean Arnoldussen, Dr Pepper pro John Balla, Eggo pro Brian Brosdahl, Straight Talk pro Tom Keenan and 2011 FLW Walleye Tour Champion EverStart pro Dan Stier.

Walleye Scattered off the Point

Saturday I had the opportunity to go out with my friend Mike in pursuit of Walleye.  The lake was pretty rough with 4 and 5 footers white capping.  We decided to slow troll and cover some territory trying to locate fish.  We hung around 50 feet and Mike set the downriggers and planers to cover all of the depths. 

We had trouble keeping the hooks baited as smaller fish kept stealing the nightcrawlers.  Managed to pull in 1 yellow perch, 5 white perch, a big silver bass, and one nice walleye at 26 inches.  Talked to another fisherman who fished all day for 2 walleyes.

The walleyes must be schooled farther to the east out of Shades Beach and the Northeast Marina.  I do not think they are out to the trenches yet but may be heading that way. 

The perch fisherman in 50 feet of water were reeling them in each time we passed by trolling.  Perch fishing has been excellent this year and the fish are tightly schooled from 45 to 65 feet.  Good luck fishin'
